Be Yourself! A Journal for Catholic Girls: {Book Review}

I was intrigued about this book Be Yourself: A Journal for Catholic Girls* and thought that it would be just the right thing for 11 year old Bridget. I was right!

Journals and All about Me type books have been pretty popular with my daughters…especially during the tween years! While my older girls still journal, this one is perfect to launch Bridget into thoughtful journaling…and prayer journaling. I just love that this is a Catholic Journal featuring female saints among the prompts and activities.

Reluctant to Regular Rosary Prayer

So… the Rosary is a remarkable prayer tool and devotion and I know many people who credit the Rosary for answered prayer and family blessings. Countless pope, saints and priests have encouraged us to say the Rosary, citing the Graces. Our Lady herself promises that her Immaculate Heart will indeed triumph, especially with increased dedication to this daily devotion. For years, I’ve heard the beautiful graces attached to daily recitation of the Rosary, especially said as a family.

Why I Love My Catholic Faith

  1. The Eucharist. Just as we reminded ourselves on the Feast of Corpus Christi this past Sunday, we believe as Catholics that Jesus is present to us from the moment of Consecration when the bread and wine are transubstantiated into His Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, from the inside out. He is thus present in all the Tabernacles in all the Catholic Churches throughout the world and we can visit His Holy Presence almost any time we want.

2. Confession. What an incredible Sacrament this is! We receive the full Mercy of God through this Sacrament when we humble ourselves to confess our faults and failings to a priest, receive absolution, do penance and resolve to sin no more!

My Best Way to Pray

I tend to zone out a little watching the news and I absorb political news about as much as I retain medical details. Not very well.

I’m just not that opinionated. I have to push myself to be critical when writing book reviews and it takes me a little time to decide if I really like the movie I just saw..or maybe just the event of watching a movie in a big dark theatre and eating popcorn with quiet kids.

How on Earth can I have a personal relationship with God?

Recently, someone close to me asked “what is a personal relationship with Jesus?” after their first session of the Catholic Alpha course. I think it can be quite a foreign concept even if our practice of the Faith up to this point has been doing just what good Catholics do: going to Mass, saying the Rosary, frequent confession, daily prayer. I’m certainly no expert…I’m still learning even though I’ve been pursuing my personal relationship with Jesus for over 20 years!

Into the Arms of Mary

This is why I’m not going to use the Saint Generator this year.

Now is the time to figure out all those resolutions for the new year, right? As Catholics, our new Liturgical Year began with the first Sunday of Advent, but I don’t know, I still use January 1st as a new beginning. Rather than tackling 100 resolutions that will likely fizzle out by Epiphany, I’m trying to narrow in on a few practical and challenging-enough resolutions that I might be able to keep…and will help me pray, draw closer to Jesus, get healthier, better fulfil my vocation and enjoy 2017 to its fullest.

Handing Over My Tangled Mess

Do you ever worry? Do you ever pray Jesus, I trust in You, all the while coordinating your best backup plan just in case?

I do.

Sometimes my to do lists churn into sticky-note reminders for my kids’ to do lists and I’m troubleshooting things that haven’t even happened …for jobs that aren’t even my problem. Sometimes, I wake up the next day to find that all that busy work I did while I couldn’t sleep at three in the morning…was completely unnecessary.
