Pope Posts continued: The First Communion Dress

So, you heard about =&0=& from our friend Elizabeth, and how Elizabeth knitted outfits for my kids as her =&1=& Well, Elizabeth kept on knitting! She even crocheted a =&2=& dress for Emily.  Needless to say, all three of our girls will have worn this dress for their =&3=& and we will keep it …for their own girls someday. Elizabeth didn’t stop when she completed the dress for Emily. You see, Kelly came with me often to visit Elizabeth and Elizabeth had a special love for Kelly. She didn’t want Kelly to feel left out on Emily’s big =&4=&day, so she crocheted a smaller version of the dress for Kelly to wear…but insisted that my Mom make a PINK slip and sash for Kelly’s dress, to make it different from the =&5=& In those days Kelly loved the color pink…and so Elizabeth made all her sweaters and hats and blankets pink…and affectionately called her “Pinkie”. Here is Bridget with her two brothers. We love these dresses…and we were so pleased to have Bridget wear “Pinkie’s dress” at Adam’s Baptism…and she will no doubt wear the =&4=&dress next year! Hey, do you have a =&7=&this year?  Did you check out the=&8=& as part of the post about =&9=&

Kitchen Table Felt Castle

I’ve seen so many cool DIY forts made to fit the kitchen table that I just had to make one for my own kids.  This is a project I actually tackled a couple years ago, but my kids still play with it.  We’ve also been able to breathe new life into it, by adding IKEA felt tools…

Adam and Mother Mary: Feast of the Assumption!

We moved to our house in 2002 and we still marvel at what a blessing this house has been with the big backyard for our family with all these kids.  Frisbee, soccer, a splash pad and clubhouse in the summer… and our rink and luge run in the winter.  All year round, Mary watches over the kids and our house from the Mary Garden in the corner. For all the trouble he gets into, we have discovered that 2 year old Adam has a neat little devotion to Our Lady.  He visits Mary at least once a day and gives her hugs and kisses. Happy Feast of the Assumption! read more...for Equipping Catholic Families!

Cataloguing the Family Holy Card Collection

Over the years, we have collected a good supply of holy cards.  These are beautiful little cards of various saints, often with a little prayer or devotion on the back.  Others, given out at a funeral Mass, remind us of a loved one who passed away, as their information is on the other side of the card.  It’s a shame to hide these away in a box, even though I am referring to them quite often, looking for images of the saints for crafts on my blog like:

I Spy…the Saints collages,
painted wooden saints
Saints games
and Saint crafts
featuring these awesome holy heroes.

For my purposes, I have found it helpful to organize the holy cards by monthly feast days. I used a photo box…and for the first time ever used the little divider pages included! As my collection isn’t SO vast, I have found enough room in the box to include one of my copies of the Lives of the Saints, for easy reference.

a Treasure Chest in a Book: a Family Tradition

Build your own Family Culture and Traditions…and start during Ordinary Time!

Collect family artifacts and treasures: keep a collection of family documents, classic photos, newspaper articles, certificates, letters from the toothfairy or letters to Santa, programs from funeral Masses, graduations, wedding invitations, birthday invitations, letters of acceptance, report cards…even if they are photocopies of the real thing! This is what we created our Family Treasure Chest for! These and other family-centric activities, crafts and traditions  can be found in A Treasure Chest of Traditions for Catholic Families. Altered Collage Books:  a Treasure Chest in a Book! Years ago, I was fascinated by the books Griffin and Sabine: An Extraordinary Correspondence. “Thus begins the strange and intriguing correspondence of Griffin and Sabine.  It is a story that is partly a romance, partly a mystery, and completely a work of art.  Each page contains a new card or letter…the complete correspondence tells an extraordinary story in an extraordinary way.” The whole book is packed with stamped letters and postcards, with striking images and artwork. =&3=& Intrigued by the Griffin and Sabine books, I began my own altered collage books: one for each child, in a story book that reminded me of them! Click this link at www.littlebit.com for some resources to make your own altered collage books !

I decided to use “Enchantment in the Garden”, adding pictures from “The Fairy Tale Catalogue”.

I was enthused by the illustrations in the books.  In this one, I cut a window in one page, to show the illustration in the next.  I glued the pages together and added gesso to make it a little dream-like.
