The Franciscan Saints by Robert Ellsberg
Audio Book Version of The Franciscan Saints
I’m a big fan of the Catholic Saints and Holy Heroes of our Faith and I had NO idea that there are over 100 canonized, Saints (and Venerables, Blesseds and Servants of God) linked to the Franciscan Order.
Not only are there the mainstream Franciscan Saints starting with St. Francis of Assisi himself and one of his first followers St. Clare, but the list includes St. Anthony of Padua, St. Elizabeth of Hungary, St. Thomas More, St. Angela Merici, St. Paschal Baylon, St. Joseph of Cupertino, St. Junipero Serra, St. Maximilian Kolbe and St. Pio of Pietrelcina. All of these big name Saints…as well as about 100 less familiar saints and not yet canonized holy people were in some way inspired by St. Francis and were faithful Franciscans of one form or another.
Each account carefully introduces a Holy Hero and explains their connection to the Franciscan movement sweeping Europe; characterized by a special love and service to the poor. It is interesting that a couple poets, religious and ‘Third Order Franciscans” (not yet beatified) are included as well, as holy men and women with a particular Franciscan affiliation.
This is a wonderful resource with well-researched and beautifully-written biographies of some seriously holy people! I’m so thankful for the opportunity to review this book from Franciscan Media and keep it with our treasured saints books!
