Your child’s confirmation is a once-in-a-lifetime event. You don’t want to let it go unappreciated. Take some time to understand and appreciate this wonderful Sacrament. Here are a few crucial ways to prepare your child for the big day.
1. Have a Conversation
Avoid the temptation to go through the motions and shuffle your child through the Sacrament. Talk to your child about the significance of receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation and don’t rely on religious educators to teach them.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when having your conversation:
- Find out if your child understands the Catholic Church and the Sacrament of confirmation
- Talk about the Sacrament and its ability to bring spiritual nourishment.
- Find out why they want to be confirmed
Your connection will change after a mature spiritual discussion. Your child’s knowledge may end up surprising you. Having an honest conversation also gives you the chance to clarify things and explain the process. Don’t be surprised if you get closer in the process.
Don’t be disheartened if your child seems confused. Try not to let feelings of inadequacy or spiritual incompetence stop you from moving forward. The goal is to get your adolescent thinking about “big picture” religion issues and to let them know they can talk about the spiritual battles they will inevitably face in life.
2. Choosing Confirmation Gifts That Help Your Child Continue Their Journey of Faith
When getting a confirmation gift for your child, consider how it could help on their spiritual journey. The best gifts should help keep the faith alive. Note that no gift can work well for everyone. Consider your child’s needs and provide the most helpful gift.
If you wish to celebrate your faith with confirmation gifts, here are a few options to consider:
- A rosary
- A bible or prayer book
- Catholic candles
- Prayer
In the Arma Dei Shoppe, we have already researched and formatted printable craft kits you can use with your child to learn more about the Sacrament and the Saints and to create a treasured scrapbook of your Child’s Faith journey.

3. Pick the Right Sponsor
You may be tempted to choose a “cool” person as your sponsor. However, you should seek out someone who is more than just enjoyable to spend time with. Pick someone that you admire. They should be able to give your child spiritual direction when necessary. Make sure it’s someone you feel comfortable approaching with faith and personal concerns.
4. Choose a Saint You Can Identify With
Again, avoid choosing a Saint solely because of how well-known they are or because of how great their name sounds. Spend some time reflecting on them and praying for direction. Read up on a few saints’ biographies before making your decision. Choose one whose story you can relate to.
5. Understand the Process
You will probably go over the details in your classes. However, you must take some time to understand what will be happening. Here are a few things to expect;
The Priest Intercedes
The priest intercedes for you by placing their hands over you. They pray to the Holy Spirit to bestow upon you the same blessings that Mary, the Apostles, and all the Saints who have come before you received. Think about what it might be like to experience the Holy Spirit’s descent.
Anointing With Oil
Anointing oil signifies abundance and joy; it cleanses and heals you. During dedication, it represents joy, made lovely in Christ. It could also represent cleansing your sin and healing past wounds and hurts.
The Peace Sign
This feature of the Sacrament serves to remind us of the value of our local community. The Church functions as the Body of Christ, and you play a role in that.
Children have the opportunity to take a significant step toward becoming full-fledged church members and proclaim their beliefs during church confirmation. Therefore, it is crucial to prepare for the day and celebrate it. Take advantage of the above tips to ensure you have a great time.
