a Frenzy of Feast Days

frenzy of feast days

This is a busy week with serious Feasting for Catholics with a number of awesome Feast Days!

We launched this 2nd Week of Advent with the Feast of St Nicholas! I grew up with the tradition of a visiting St Nicholas AND the Krampus.

At dusk, St Nicholas would appear at his front door, ready to quiz the kids on their Catechism. Rattling heavy chains behind St. Nicholas was the Krampus. This (real-life-person) nasty devil would threaten to drag away misbehaving kids …and the threat was real enough to keep the kids a little nervous, practiced in their Catechism and ready to defend their behavior over the last year.

Immaculate Conception

Yesterday, was the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary .

December 8th is the Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception.  This Feast Day does not celebrate Jesus’ Conception, but rather Mary’s conception within the womb of her mother, St Anne.  This special day appropriately occurs 9 months before the Birth of Mary within the Liturgical Calendar.

Find Mary crafts and Feast Day food for this special Feast Day!

This special Feast Day opened the door to the Jubilee Year of Mercy!

We have a craft kit for that! The Adjustable Liturgical Calendar can be used year after year, accommodating the moving dates of Lent and Easter and the floating weeks of Ordinary Time!

St Juan watercolorToday is the Feast of St Juan Diego!

An imprinted image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was found with out-of-season roses, in the cloak (or tilma) of Juan Diego.  The Blessed Virgin Mary had appeared to Juan and encouraged him to convince the authorities to build the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, now a popular pilgrimage site.

St-Lucy-Wreath

and Sunday we celebrate the Feast of St Lucy with wreaths and treats!

December 13th is the Feast Day of St Lucy. St Lucy was a young Christian who vowed at an early age to be a Bride of Christ.  She was reported to the government for the crime of being a Christian, by a suitor she had turned away.  One legend reports that she plucked out her own eyes because their beauty attracted unwanted attention from suitors.  Her eyes were miraculously healed.
