Feast Day Fun: St Maria Goretti

St Maria

At the age of 12, a young man tried to make Maria sin. When she absolutely refused, he stabbed her and she died a day later, but not before she forgave her murderer. Her murderer was arrested and 27 years later repented and reformed after seeing Maria in a dream. St Maria Goretti is the patron saint of girls and purity.

Feast Day Crafts and Activities

I actually do not have any specific activities to celebrate the Feast Day of St Maria Goretti, in A Treasure Chest of Traditions for Catholic Families but I have developed quite a fondness for this brave young saint through my research while making the Saint Scripts Craft Kits (Series ONE and TWO).

These are links I have found online and they are excellent resources to inform your conversations about chastity with your children…and to inspire you with your own celebration of the life of St Maria Goretti and the virtues she modelled for us.

1This comprehensive explanation of St Maria’s life and virtue from Catholic Culture is an excellent resource. It’s a little too much information for the younger crowd, but  can be summarized for younger children and used to guide more specific conversations with tweens or teens. Handprint Lilies 2

Check out the special St Maria Goretti celebration at Shower of Roses! In addition to finding St Maria coloring pages and playing Forgiveness Tag, Jessica led the craft to make Handprint Lilies (the symbol of purity!) and served Flames of Forgiveness cupcakes from Catholic Cuisine.
