Pope Trivia and NEW Craft Kit: 24 Popes!

Did you know that there have been 267 Popes, including Stephen II, who died four days after his election but before his episcopal consecration?

Did you know that 83 popes have been canonized as Saints by the Catholic Church?
Most of the canonized Popes lived in the Early Church, up until the 5th Century, including the very first 35 popes.

The most recent Pope canonizations have been:

St. Pius X (canonized 1954)
St. John XXIII (canonized 2014)
St. John Paul II (canonized 2014)

And here is the list of Blesseds and Venerables (from ChatGPT):

Beatified Popes (Blesseds)

  1. Pope Benedict XI (papacy: 1303)
Beatified in 1736 by Pope Clement XII.

  2. Pope Eugene III (papacy: 1145–1153)
Beatified in 1872 by Pope Pius IX.

  3. Pope Gregory X (papacy: 1271–1276)
Beatified in 1713 by Pope Clement XI.

  4. Pope Innocent V (papacy: 1276)
Beatified in 1898 by Pope Leo XIII.

  5. Pope Innocent XI (papacy: 1676–1689)
Beatified in 1956 by Pope Pius XII.

  6. Pope Pius IX (papacy: 1846–1878)
Beatified in 2000 by Pope John Paul II.

  7. Pope Urban II (papacy: 1088–1099)
Beatified in 1881 by Pope Leo XIII.

  8. Pope Urban V (papacy: 1362–1370)
Beatified in 1870 by Pope Pius IX.

  9. Pope Victor III (papacy: 1086–1087)
Beatified in 1887 by Pope Leo XIII.

  10. Pope John Paul I (papacy: 1978)
Beatified in 2022 by Pope Francis.

These popes have been officially recognized as “Blessed” by the Catholic Church, indicating they have been beatified but not yet canonized as saints. Their causes for canonization remain open, and further steps are required before they can be declared saints.

Additionally, there are other popes whose causes for sainthood are in earlier stages:

  • Venerable:

    • Pope Pius XII (papacy: 1939–1958)
Declared Venerable in 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI.

  • Servants of God:

    • Pope Benedict XIII (papacy: 1724–1730)
Declared a Servant of God in 2017 by Pope Francis.

    • Pope Pius VII (papacy: 1800–1823)
Declared a Servant of God in 2007 by Pope Benedict XVI.
